Representatives of the Office of Commerce, Investment and Tourism (OCIT) and the Mili Atoll Local Government met in Majuro to discuss plans for a Tourism Awareness Program and the development of a Mili Atoll Tourism Profile, scheduled for implementation in July 2026.
The Office of Commerce, Investment and Tourism (OCIT) recently met with representatives of the Mili Atoll Local Government to discuss preparations for a tourism development mission to Mili Atoll scheduled for mid-to-late July 2026.
The planning meeting focused on coordinating a comprehensive Tourism Awareness Program and the development of a Mili Atoll Tourism Profile, both of which are intended to support sustainable tourism growth and community-based economic development throughout the atoll.
The Tourism Awareness Program will engage local leaders, community members, youth, women, and business stakeholders in discussions about the role of tourism in economic development. Topics will include the benefits and challenges of tourism, destination planning, tourism product development, environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and opportunities for local entrepreneurship and employment. The program will also encourage community participation in identifying Mili's tourism aspirations and unique visitor experiences.
In addition, OCIT will work closely with the Mili Atoll Local Government and community stakeholders to compile information for the Mili Atoll Tourism Profile, which will document the atoll's tourism assets, cultural heritage, historical sites, natural attractions, visitor activities, accessibility, infrastructure, accommodations, and investment opportunities. The profile will serve as an important planning and promotional tool for future tourism development initiatives.
Speaking during the meeting, OCIT representative emphasized the importance of community-driven tourism development.
"The success of tourism in the Marshall Islands depends on the active participation of local communities. Through this initiative, we aim to help Mili identify and showcase its unique attractions while ensuring that tourism development remains sustainable, culturally appropriate, and beneficial to local residents."
Mili Atoll is recognized for its pristine environment, rich cultural traditions, traditional fishing practices, handicrafts, historical sites, and marine-based experiences that have the potential to attract both domestic and international visitors. The tourism profiling exercise will help identify these assets and establish priorities for future tourism development and investment.
Representatives from the Mili Atoll Local Government welcomed the collaboration and expressed their commitment to working alongside OCIT to strengthen tourism awareness and create new opportunities for economic growth while preserving the atoll's cultural and environmental heritage.
The July 2026 mission represents another milestone in OCIT's ongoing efforts to support outer island tourism development and expand opportunities for communities across the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
